Published Methodology

How We Rank & Review Businesses

The same documented process sits behind every verdict we publish — here it is, step by step.

Step 1 — Scoping the Market

Before ranking any category — banks, colleges, law firms, hospitals — we map the full market: every significant provider a Kenyan consumer could realistically choose. Businesses do not apply to be included; we include them because they matter to consumers.

Step 2 — Data Collection

For each business we gather evidence from multiple independent sources:

  • Verified customer feedback — Google review volumes, ratings and recurring themes (both praise and complaints).
  • Regulatory standing — licensing, registration and any published sanctions from bodies such as CBK, LSK, KMPDC, TVETA or CUE, depending on the industry.
  • Pricing — published rates and, where pricing is opaque, quotes gathered directly.
  • Track record — years in operation, scale, notable work and market reputation.

Step 3 — First-Hand Testing

Numbers alone don't capture customer experience, so our researchers test it directly: how quickly calls, WhatsApp messages and emails are answered; how clear and honest the answers are; and how accessible offices and digital channels actually are.

Step 4 — Weighted Scoring

Each business is scored against criteria weighted for that industry. A hospital ranking weights clinical capability and emergency access heavily; a hosting ranking weights uptime and support. The weightings are published in the ranking itself so readers can check our reasoning.

Step 5 — Editorial Review

A senior editor verifies every factual claim, checks the scoring maths, and challenges conclusions that aren't fully supported by the evidence. Only then does a ranking or review go live.

Step 6 — Ongoing Updates

Markets move. We revisit published rankings on a rolling schedule and whenever significant news breaks. When content changes, its "last updated" date changes — and only then. We never touch dates to look fresh for search engines.

The independence rule: businesses can invite a review and can advertise with us, but no business can pay for a ranking position, preview a verdict, or edit our conclusions. Ever.
