How to Check KCSE Results: SMS, Online and School Portal (2026 Guide)
How to Check KCSE Results
The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) releases KCSE results after marking, usually early in the year following the exam. The Ministry of Education announces the release date, and results become available by SMS, online and through schools at the same time.
Method 1: SMS (20076)
- Open your phone's messaging app.
- Type your KCSE index number followed by KCSE - for example: 12345678001KCSE
- Send it to 20076.
- You receive your grades by SMS.
The SMS costs KES 25, and the service works on all major networks. Make sure the index number is exactly right - an error still costs the SMS charge.
Method 2: KNEC Results Portal
- Visit the official KNEC results portal at results.knec.ac.ke.
- Enter your index number and name as registered.
- Submit to view your results. You can take a screenshot or print for reference.
On release day the portal can be slow due to heavy traffic; try again later or use SMS.
Method 3: Through Your School
Schools access results for all their candidates through the KNEC portal and usually share them with students. This is also where the result slip and later the original certificate are collected.
After You Get Your Results
- Apply for placement: KUCCPS opens applications soon after results - see our KUCCPS application guide.
- Explore options for every grade: degrees, diplomas, certificates and artisan courses are all viable - see courses to study without a C plus.
- Re-marking: if you strongly believe a subject was marked incorrectly, KNEC allows applications for re-marking within the window it announces, for a fee per subject.
- Collect your certificate: certificates are released through schools some months after results. Keep the result slip safely until then.
Avoid Results Scams
Every year fraudsters claim they can "upgrade" grades or sell results early. KNEC does not sell or change results through third parties. Use only the official SMS code and portal.
Understanding Your Result Slip
Your KCSE result shows a grade for each subject and a mean grade, from A (plain) down to E. The mean grade is calculated from seven subjects under KNEC grading rules, which since the 2024 exam use Mathematics, one language (English or Kiswahili) and your best five other subjects.
| Mean grade | What it typically opens |
|---|---|
| C+ and above | Degree programmes, subject to cluster requirements |
| C (plain) and C- | Diploma programmes at universities, national polytechnics, TVETs and KMTC |
| D+ and D (plain) | Certificate programmes |
| D- and E | Artisan courses and bridging routes |
Every grade has a pathway. Many diploma holders later progress to degrees, and technical certificates lead directly to work.
Your Options by Grade
- Degree: apply through KUCCPS for government-sponsored places, or directly to private universities. See our private universities ranking.
- Diploma: strong, employable routes in engineering, ICT, health sciences, business and hospitality - see diploma vs degree in Kenya.
- Certificate and artisan: practical skills such as electrical installation, plumbing, beauty, fashion and motor vehicle mechanics.
- Bridging courses: some institutions offer bridging in mathematics or sciences so you can meet a programme's subject requirements.
- Re-sitting: some candidates choose to re-sit KCSE as private candidates to improve a grade.
Important Dates After Results
| Event | Typical timing |
|---|---|
| Results release | Early in the year after the exam |
| KUCCPS application window | Opens after results, announced by KUCCPS |
| Re-marking applications | Within the window announced by KNEC |
| Certificates to schools | Several months after results |
| University and college intakes | Mostly September, with some January and May intakes |
Common Mistakes on Results Day
- Typing the index number wrongly in the SMS - each attempt still costs KES 25.
- Paying "agents" for results that are free on the official portal and cheap by SMS.
- Rushing into a course without checking accreditation. Confirm that a college and programme are recognised by the relevant regulator, such as TVETA or the Commission for University Education.
- Ignoring cluster requirements. A good mean grade does not guarantee a degree place if your subject grades miss the programme's cluster.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I check KCSE results without the index number? No. KNEC results are linked to your index number. If you have lost it, ask your school, which holds the candidate list.
Can I get KCSE results for a previous year? Yes. Past results can be confirmed through your school or KNEC, and certificates for past years are collected from the school or KNEC if the school has closed.
What if my results are withheld? KNEC withholds results in cases under investigation, such as suspected irregularities. The school is informed and KNEC communicates the outcome after investigation.
How do I replace a lost KCSE certificate? KNEC does not reissue lost certificates, but it issues a certification of results on application, which serves the same purpose for employers and institutions.
Supporting Students After Results
Results day can be emotional. Parents and guardians can help by focusing on options rather than disappointment, researching courses together, and visiting accredited colleges and universities before deciding. Career counselling from schools, colleges and county education offices helps students choose programmes that match their strengths and the job market.
