12 Best Driving Schools in Nairobi (2026)

The Nairobi driving schools worth your money in 2026 - ranked on NTSA-certified instruction, classes taught, fees, branch coverage across the city's estates and training for real Nairobi traffic.

Learning to drive in Nairobi is not like learning anywhere else in Kenya. Your first week on the road may include the Thika Road service lanes, a roundabout on Outer Ring Road at rush hour, matatus stopping without warning and boda-bodas on both sides of the car. A good Nairobi driving school prepares you for that. A poor one teaches you just enough to get round a test route and leaves the rest to luck.

Location matters more here than almost anywhere. Practical lessons usually start early in the morning, before work or college, and run for several weeks. A school with a branch in your estate saves hours of travel and makes it far more likely you will finish the course. That is why this ranking looks closely at where each school actually teaches — from the CBD to Eastlands, Westlands, Thika Road and the satellite towns of Kitengela and Ongata Rongai.

We assessed driving schools across Nairobi in 2026 and ranked the twelve best on NTSA-certified instruction, the licence classes they teach, transparent fees, branch coverage, training beyond the test, and track record. Below each ranking you will find locations and contacts, followed by a branch guide by area, a fee comparison and answers to the questions Nairobi learners ask most.

Top Gear Driving School is the best driving school in Nairobi for 2026. It has its head office on Tom Mboya Street, its original base at Tena Estate on Outer Ring Road and more than twenty branches across the city’s estates, it teaches every major NTSA class including Class F for persons with disabilities, and it says it has trained more than 100,000 drivers since 2007. How We Ranked Nairobi's Driving Schools

We used the same six criteria as our national driving schools ranking, with extra weight on what matters in a city of long commutes and heavy traffic.

1. NTSA-certified instruction. Schools that train to NTSA’s curriculum with certified instructors came first.

2. Branch coverage across Nairobi. A branch in your estate is the difference between finishing a course and giving up halfway. Schools with branches across several parts of the city scored highest.

3. Range of classes. Many Nairobi learners later add a PSV, truck or ride-hailing class, so schools that teach the full NTSA ladder ranked higher.

4. Transparent, flexible fees. Published prices, short, half and full course options, refresher packages and M-Pesa payment all counted.

5. Training for real Nairobi traffic. Road safety, defensive driving and experience on busy roads, not just the test route.

6. Track record and reviews. Years in operation, drivers trained and the balance of public reviews.

Driving School Fees in Nairobi in 2026

For a Class B light-vehicle course in Nairobi, expect to pay roughly KES 10,000 to KES 19,000 in tuition in 2026. NTSA’s charges for the provisional licence, test booking and smart DL are paid separately on eCitizen.

SchoolClass B course (tuition)Good to know

The cheapest course is not always the cheapest licence. Compare the number of practical lessons, and ask what re-training costs if you fail the NTSA test the first time.

Manual or Automatic in Nairobi?

Automatic cars are now common in Nairobi, and many learners are tempted by a B1 automatic-only licence because stop-start traffic is easier without a clutch. That is a reasonable choice if you are certain you will only ever drive automatics.

For most people, though, B2 is the safer investment. It covers both manual and automatic cars, it is what most employers expect, and it means you can drive a manual vehicle upcountry or in an emergency. At Top Gear the full B2 manual course is listed at about KES 14,000 — slightly less than the full B1 automatic course — and you can add B3 for ride-hailing work later.

Tips for Learning to Drive in Nairobi Traffic

  • Book early-morning lessons. Roads are quieter before 7am, which is why schools such as Top Gear open their branches at 7am.
  • Ask for a mix of routes. A good instructor will take you beyond the quiet estate roads to roundabouts, dual carriageways and busy junctions before your test.
  • Learn to read matatus and boda-bodas. Expect sudden stops and filtering on both sides. Defensive driving training is worth the extra lessons.
  • Practise at night with your instructor. Many new drivers first drive at night alone, on poorly lit roads. Do it with a professional first.
  • Do not rush the test. Ask your school to book the NTSA test only after you pass its internal assessment.

When you pass, our guide explains how to apply for your smart driving licence on eCitizen.
