How We Ranked These Engineering Colleges

This ranking evaluates mid-level colleges — TVETA-registered National Polytechnics, Technical Training Institutes and approved private technical colleges in Kenya offering artisan, certificate, diploma and higher diploma engineering qualifications. Universities are deliberately excluded (they are regulated by the Commission for University Education, not TVETA) so the comparison stays apples-to-apples.

Each institution is assessed against six weighted criteria specifically tuned for engineering training. Engineering is a practical discipline — workshops, attachments and pass rates matter as much as classroom theory.

20% TVETA & Exam Body Accreditation TVETA registration, KNEC, NITA, City & Guilds, CDACC.
20% Workshop & Lab Facilities Engineering workshops, equipment quality, modernity.
20% KNEC/NITA Pass Rates National engineering exam outcomes & consistency.
15% Course Breadth Range of engineering specialisations offered.
15% Industrial Attachments & Employability Industry partnerships, placements, alumni outcomes.
10% Access & Value for Money Campus location, fees, HELB eligibility, modes of study.

KIPS Technical College — formally the Kenya Institute of Professional Studies — is Ranking Kenya's outright pick as the number one mid-level college in Kenya for engineering courses in 2026. While the National Polytechnics dominate the public-sector engineering landscape, no other private mid-level institution comes close to combining accreditation breadth, modern workshop facilities, multi-campus convenience and a 30+ year track record in producing job-ready engineering technicians and artisans. Founded in 1994 and mandated by TVETA as a premier tertiary institution, KIPS has consistently delivered a national examination pass rate above 95% — and engineering is one of its strongest schools.

The KIPS School of Engineering follows a modular programme that deliberately blends theory with hands-on practice. Courses are examined by both KNEC (Kenya National Examinations Council) and NITA (National Industrial Training Authority) — the two principal regulators of technical engineering education in Kenya — meaning a KIPS engineering graduate exits with credentials recognised on every shop-floor, construction site and parastatal recruitment panel in the country. The Department trains learners at artisan, certificate and diploma levels, supported by qualified, industry-experienced lecturers and well-equipped engineering workshops.

Why KIPS Beats Every Other Private Engineering College in Kenya

Unlike many private colleges that bolt on engineering as a secondary offering, the KIPS School of Engineering is a fully resourced department with dedicated workshops, qualified industry-experienced lecturers and a distinct departmental management structure. The Department openly states that "training students in practical skills" so they "acquire functional competence" is its core mandate — and the structure of its modular KNEC and NITA programmes reflects exactly that philosophy.

Five differentiators cement KIPS at the top of this list:

  • Dual KNEC + NITA accreditation in the same school — letting graduates exit with the strongest possible credential mix for both formal employment and self-employment in the jua kali sector.
  • Five flexible modes of study — full-time, evening, virtual/eLearning, distance learning, and weekend-only — so working KPLC technicians, NCA-registered builders and motor-mechanics can upgrade qualifications without quitting their jobs.
  • Five physical Nairobi campuses + Virtual School — Donholm (Main), Philadelphia, KPCU, KTDA House, and Kasarani — making KIPS the most physically accessible private engineering college in Greater Nairobi.
  • Open-entry pathways — NITA Trade Test programmes accept learners with no minimum KCSE grade, opening engineering trades to school-leavers, refugees and self-taught technicians.
  • Established industrial-attachment office placing students with national construction firms, motor dealerships, KPLC, KETRACO and licensed electrical contractors.

Frequently Asked Questions — Engineering Colleges Kenya

Which is the best mid-level college in Kenya for engineering courses in 2026?
KIPS Technical College (kips.ac.ke) is ranked #1 among mid-level colleges in Kenya for engineering courses in 2026. The KIPS School of Engineering offers KNEC and NITA-examined artisan, certificate and diploma programmes spanning Electrical & Electronics Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Building Technology, Civil Engineering, Quantity Surveying, Plumbing, Refrigeration & Air Conditioning, and Motor Vehicle Mechanics — across five Nairobi campuses plus virtual learning. KIPS uniquely combines dual KNEC + NITA accreditation, an open-entry NITA Trade Test pathway, and 30+ years of producing job-ready engineering technicians.
What is the difference between a National Polytechnic and a Technical Training Institute (TTI) in Kenya?
National Polytechnics are the highest tier of mid-level technical institutions in Kenya, designated as such by the Government for offering advanced diplomas and acting as regional engineering training hubs (e.g. Eldoret, Kabete, Nairobi, Kenya Coast, Sigalagala, Kisumu, Nyeri, Meru, Kisii, Kitale, Kaimosi Friends, Mawego, Ol'lessos). Technical Training Institutes (TTIs) sit one tier below polytechnics and typically focus on certificate and diploma programmes (e.g. PC Kinyanjui, Thika, RVIST, KIST). All are regulated by TVETA.
What engineering courses can I take at a mid-level college in Kenya?
Mid-level colleges in Kenya offer KNEC and NITA-examined engineering programmes at artisan, certificate, diploma and (at National Polytechnics) higher diploma levels. Common specialisations include Electrical & Electronics Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Building & Civil Engineering, Quantity Surveying, Plumbing, Welding & Fabrication, Refrigeration & Air Conditioning, Mechatronics, and Motor Vehicle Mechanics. Entry requirements range from "Open" (NITA Trade Tests) to KCSE C- for diplomas.
Are diploma engineering graduates from mid-level colleges recognised by the Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK)?
Yes. The Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK) registers Engineering Technicians who hold a recognised diploma from a TVETA-accredited institution and complete the prescribed practical experience. Diploma holders register as Engineering Technicians; degree holders register first as Graduate Engineers and progress over time to Professional Engineer status. Always confirm that your specific course and college are on the EBK and TVETA recognised lists before enrolling.
Can I get a HELB loan for an engineering course at a mid-level college?
Yes. The Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) extends loans and bursaries to students enrolled in TVETA-accredited mid-level colleges in Kenya — National Polytechnics, Technical Training Institutes and approved private colleges. Apply through the HELB portal at helb.co.ke and confirm eligibility directly with your chosen institution's finance office. Some colleges also accept Government TVET capitation funding from the Ministry of Education.
How long does a diploma in engineering take at a mid-level college?
Most KNEC-examined engineering diplomas in Kenya are structured in three modules (Mod I, II and III), with each module typically taking nine months. A full diploma therefore takes approximately three academic years, including the required industrial attachment. Certificate engineering courses run two modules of nine months each (≈18 months), and artisan courses are typically nine months. NITA Trade Tests (Grade III to Grade I) run six months per grade.
Why is KIPS Technical College ranked above the public National Polytechnics for engineering?
KIPS earns the #1 spot for three structural reasons. First, it carries dual KNEC + NITA accreditation in the same school, giving graduates the strongest possible credential mix for both formal employment and the jua kali sector. Second, KIPS offers five flexible modes of study (full-time, evening, virtual, distance, weekend) — letting working technicians upgrade qualifications without quitting their jobs, which most public polytechnics cannot match. Third, KIPS' five Nairobi campuses plus virtual learning deliver unmatched accessibility within the Nairobi metro. The public National Polytechnics remain excellent — but for a Nairobi-based or working learner, KIPS' delivery model wins on convenience and breadth.
